View or share your driving licence information

Check your driving record, penalty points and the vehicles you can drive, and create a 'check code' to share it, for example with a car hire company. For licences issued in England, Wales or Scotland.

Step by step

  1. Open the GOV.UK service and enter your licence details.
  2. View your record: vehicle categories, penalty points and any disqualifications.
  3. If someone needs to check your licence, create a check code and give it to them. The code is valid for 21 days.

What you need

  • Your driving licence number
  • Your National Insurance number
  • The postcode on your driving licence

Common mistakes

  • Using it to look up someone else's record without permission. That is a criminal offence.
  • Creating the check code too early: it expires after 21 days, so make it close to the date you hire the car.
