Step by step

  1. Check that your nationality is on the list and that you meet the age limit and savings requirement.
  2. If you are from Hong Kong or Taiwan, enter the ballot first: you can only apply if you are selected.
  3. Apply online from outside the UK, no earlier than 6 months before you travel, and pay the fee and the healthcare surcharge.
  4. Prove your identity with the UK Immigration: ID Check app or at a visa application centre.

What you need

  • A valid passport or travel document.
  • A bank statement showing you have the required savings.
  • TB test results if you are from a country where the test is needed.
  • Some nationalities need extra documents, such as a recent criminal record certificate or the ballot confirmation email.

Common mistakes

  • Applying more than 6 months before your travel date.
  • Forgetting certified translations for documents not in English or Welsh.
