Step by step
- If someone's life is at risk, call 999 or go to A&E instead.
- Use 111 online or the NHS App (for people aged 5 and over), or call 111. Call if the patient is a child under 5.
- Answer the questions about the symptoms.
- Follow the advice: it may be a pharmacy, an urgent treatment centre, an out of hours GP, a nurse callback or A&E.
Common mistakes
- Using 111 for a life threatening emergency. Call 999.
- Using 111 online for a child under 5. Call 111 instead.
- Expecting 111 to issue a fit note or book appointments elsewhere in the NHS. It cannot.
