Step by step

  1. Sign in to the forecast service on GOV.UK or use the HMRC app. You can create sign in details if you do not have them.
  2. Prove your identity if asked, usually with photo ID.
  3. Check your forecast, your State Pension age and any gaps in your National Insurance record.
  4. See if paying voluntary contributions to fill gaps would increase your pension.

What you need

  • Photo ID such as a passport or driving licence, if you need to prove your identity
  • Your sign in details (you can create them the first time)

Common mistakes

  • Using the forecast if you already get your State Pension or have deferred it: contact the Pension Service instead.
  • Treating your State Pension age as fixed: it is reviewed regularly and the forecast can change.
