Report a pothole or road problem
Local roads are looked after by your council. Major roads in England, Northern Ireland roads and Scottish council roads each have their own reporting service.

Who handles it
Handled by your local council This procedure is done with the council where you live. Find your council »
Step by step
- Work out who looks after the road: your local council for most streets, or National Highways for motorways and major A roads in England.
- In England and Wales, enter your postcode on GOV.UK to reach your council's reporting page.
- In Scotland, choose your council on mygov.scot. In Northern Ireland, report it online to DfI Roads through nidirect.
- Describe the size and depth of the defect and exactly where it is: road or footway, near which junction, which lane.
What you need
- The exact location (street, nearby junction or landmark)
- A description of the size and depth of the defect
Common mistakes
- Reporting to the wrong authority. Check whether it is a council road or a major road first.
- Giving a vague location, so the crew cannot find the defect.
